“I don’t always say ‘I’m not racist…’
…but when I do, I’m about to say the most racist things that you’ve ever heard in your life.”
nothing worth listening to has ever been said after the phrase “I’m not racist but..”

Why Do I Ever Click on Deadline? WHY?
Okay, this is bullshit. Kimberly Pierce isn’t a female director. She doesn’t direct with her vagina. She’s a director. She’s not on any side of Kathryn Bigelow because they share the same anatomy. It is shit like this that makes it harder for studios to make hires without considering gender, cause doucheknuckles like Nikki Finke and Mike Fleming get page views from talking about how she’s a brave woman for directing like a director.
Kim Pierce to direct movie about Aryan prison reign… Deadline -

: Steubenville's Jane Doe asked people to do something...
I’ve never asked anyone to reblog anything before, and I probably won’t again. But I am now - because this matters.
The Steubenville rape victim, when offered money for her legal expenses or counselling, asked that people donated to a shelter for abused women and children in her county, Madden…

It’s pretty bad when Fox News has less-shitty journalism than you.

For readers interested in learning more about how not to be labeled as registered sex offenders, a good first step is not to rape unconscious women, no matter how good your grades are. Regardless of the strength of your GPA (weighted or unweighted), if you commit rape, there is a possibility you may someday be convicted of a sex crime. This is because of your decision to commit a sex crime instead of going for a walk, or reading a book by Cormac McCarthy. Your ability to perform calculus or play football is generally not taken into consideration in a court of law. Should you prefer to be known as “Good student and excellent football player Trent Mays” rather than “Convicted sex offender Trent Mays,” try stressing the studying and tackling and giving the sex crimes a miss altogether.
—Mallory Ortberg, on Gawker
Mallory Ortberg, laying waste to fools on GAWKER, today, regarding CNN’s offensively lovey-dovey coverage of the two high school football stars who were convicted on Sunday of sexually assaulting a blacked-out drunk 16 year old girl from a neighboring town at a party, and then sharing pictures of her on the internet.
More details HERE.
I think it’s reasonable to say that, given the football culture of Steubenville, OH and the notorious difficulty of proving sexual assault even when the victim REMEMBERS WHAT HAPPENED, it is likely that what these jocks did to this other human would have become simply a dark part of Steubenville high school folklore, were it not for the digital trail of photos, tweets, and texts that the bystanders and assaulters themselves put out into the world.
SO THANK YOU, NERDS, FOR INVENTING SOCIAL MEDIA.
And thank you, Mallory and Manhattan snark-media for reminding some people—including CNN, apparently—what personal responsibility actually means.
That is all.

Fools… thanks for 11 great days!
In eleven days we have successfully raised 59% of our goal. We have 29 days left and we’re hoping to break $9000 (only $182 more) by the end of the weekend.
How?
By not bothering you. Yep, that’s right, we’re not going to Tweet or Facebook or message you until Monday (when hopefully we will have a great video for our top referrer Bryan Wendorf.)
Instead we are hoping you’ll spread the word via email, Facebook and Twitter. One tweet or post from you can do more than we can do. So if you have a second, share a video (it can be a cute baby video) or tweet our link or share it with a friend on Facebook. We appreciate it so much and thank you for being part of our team of Fools.
Thanks for 11 great days -

Some random indie film thoughts…
I like the Veronica Mars project launching on Kickstarter and it looks like they will reach $2 million in one day. Very cool. And it gives me hope that there will be new models to finance movies independently (movies that will eventually be distributed by a studio.) The argument that crowdfunding is just rich people looking for charity is simplistic and offensive to charities. Commerce and charity aren’t the same thing. Amanda Palmer pre-selling her album to her fans so she doesn’t have to use traditional distribution models isn’t charity and never pretended to be.
And yes, it is scary when bigger fish jump into the smaller fish pond. But it isn’t always catastrophic. We’ve seen an uptick in funding for finishing funds for Fools (say that five times fast) and I think Veronica Mars on Kickstarter is good for all of us. I know that sounds all “we can play in the sandbox together!” of me but if you know me at all you know I hate everyone and want everyone else to fail unless it serves my own needs. This helps me. So I’m happy. Yes… I’m that selfish.
Speaking of which.. that Fools link? It’s http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/fools/x/2526814
If backing Veronica Mars is too mainstream for you and you’ve already given to Fools (THANK YOU!) why not back the distribution of Kurt Voss and Allison Anders “Strutter” which needs a lot less and will mean a lot more to die hard indie film nerds. http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/strutter/strutter-distribution-time
Or how about a puppet horror movie? http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/935772123/the-mill-at-calders-end-a-ghost-story-puppet-film
Side note: if that Lars Von Trier “Nymphomaniac” is Charlotte Gainsbourg being punished for having sex with people I’m gonna have to go back to hating Lars Von Trier which will be tragic cause we were just starting to get along after “Melancholia.”
